To define recyclable vs. non-recyclable,
set up a series of pictures on the board, e.g an arrow pointing to
a familiar picture of an envelope or magazine, another arrow pointing
to the recycle symbol and a third arrow pointing to a taped picture
of a can with the correct color.
On the other side of the board set up
a similar trio only this time select a non-recyclable item such as
a pizza box or a soiled paper carton to start the sequence. Make sure
the central recycling symbol is crossed out and the last arrow is
pointing to the brown garbage can.

Put students into groups of four. In the
middle of the table place a BLUE SQUARE and a GREEN SQUARE each with
the recycle symbol and a BROWN SQUARE with the symbol crossed out.
Give the group 4-8 flash cards, one or two for each person. When a
student takes a turn, he or she holds up a flash card and chooses
one member of the group to address directly:
Student 1: What is it?
Student 2: It's paper. It's recyclable
Student 1: Which can?
Student 2: The blue can
Student 1: Put it in the can please.
