Last fall 2008, the Second Opportunity for Students (S.O.S.) class, took time to study winds, especially in Antarctica and the global importance in keeping us from having a “mini” ice age in Europe. Students decided to make flags to hang in Antarctica, using the 49 signatory countries with the addition of Mexico. Prior to making the flags and sending them to Antarctica, students studied the social, political, environmental and educational issues of each country. On each flag, students wrote their hopes, dreams and wishes for each country. Each year, Charmaine Ryan, instructor, presents exciting and interesting curriculum to engage the students. In observing these teenagers, they are very committed to producing quality work, as the flags were submitted to scientists who will fly these flags in Antarctica. |
