VESL/BEST
An introductory class for Beginning ESL students to
learn English that emphasizes work-related concepts,
including typing, mathematics, organizational skills,
and time management. This course introduces the students
to Mavis Beacon, Microsoft Word, and other basic computer
components. No fee.

VESL/Beginning Office Skills
Students must have an Intermediate Level of English
and be interested in pursuing office occupations. This
20-week course is designed to assist English as a Second
Language students to acquire beginning office skills.
The course will cover computer software including: Word,
Excel, Internet Explorer, and Windows 2000. The class
also includes learning to type; using office equipment
(scanner, copy machine, fax machine, 10-key); managing
a cash box; accounting concepts; electronic and hard
copy file management; business management; time management;
office procedures and protocol; working in teams and
office etiquette. Students will have the opportunity
to learn about other vocational/academic training programs
and scholarships throughout Santa Cruz County. County
certificates for typing and Career Ladders Certificates
are available. No fee.

VESL/Workplace Business and
Computer Skills
A 20-week course designed to assist students in acquiring
beginning to intermediate skills in job readiness. The
class will cover typing fundamentals; electronic and
hard copy file management, computer software training
in Windows 2000, Word, Excel and Internet Explorer.
Administrative responsibilities including projects team
work realistic on-the-job-training and daily responsibilities.
The course will also include job readiness training
including: job searching; registering with the Career
Workforce Virtual Career Center; creating a resume and
cover letter; and interview/application tips and techniques.
County certificates for typing and Career Ladders certificates
are available. Students that want in-depth training
in a specific software are encouraged to enroll in a
Word, Excel, Internet specific course (please see pages
10 & 11 of this catalog.) No fee.
Prerequisite for enrollment: Intermediate High or advanced
English language level.

Printing Class
(Open Entry)
This course includes 300 hours of hands on professional
training in Offset Press Operator, bindery
and computer typesetting. There is a high demand for this
vocation and students from this program are employed in
print shops throughout the area. Call for more information,

VESL/Health Careers
(Open Entry)
For Beginning through Advanced levels of English. Students
will receive job skills related to the medical field while
improving their English language skills. Students will
learn patient care, infection control, safety, nutrition,
the human body, communication, and career opportunities
in the health field. No fee.

VESL/Construction (Open Entry)
For Beginning through Advanced levels of English. Students
will receive hands-on training in the construction trades
while acquiring needed English language skills. Topics
include: Identification, use and care of tools; safety;
math skills needed in construction; English skills needed
in construction; group work projects; how to get along
in the workplace; and career opportunities in the building
trades. No fee.

NURSE ASSISTANT I / CNA
This course fulfills state requirements for Pre-Certification
Nurse Assistant Training by providing completion of the
competencies in basic nursing skills in a skilled nursing
facility. Completion of 80 hours of theory and 112 hours
of supervised clinical experience are required. ($85 fee
for the California State Examination upon completion.)
$90 fee, textbook ($32) required. Physical exam (approx.
$35), TB Skin Test (approx. $20) and finger print clearance
($47) are required. Register at the Green Valley Center,
294 Green Valley Road, Watsonville, no mail in registration
accepted. Limited enrollment.

NURSE ASSISTANT II /Acute Care
Prior state certification as a CNA is required, plus
a copy of TB test, MMR immunization or Rubella titer
blood test. Training is in an acute care hospital. Requires
completion of 50 hours of combined theory and supervised
clinical acute care experience. Upon successful completion,
student earns Certificate of Competency from the adult
school. Instruction includes CPR Certification. CEU
credit available. $60 materials fee. Limited enrollment.

Home Health Aide
Home Health Aide is a 40-hour add-on for licensed CNAs
to learn the skills needed to care for people in their
homes. Students will receive up to 40 CEUs for the class.
Training will be at the Adult School's Green Valley
Center and a local residential care home, plus home
visits will be arranged with an RN from a local home
health agency. $60 registration fee--testbooks extra.

CLINICAL MEDICAL ASSISTANT TRAINING PROGRAM*
Watsonville/Aptos Adult School, in collaboration with
Boston Reed and local healthcare facilities, is offering
a 17-week Clinical Medical Assistant training program.
The "back office" medical assistant's primary
role is to assist the doctor in providing patient care.
Clinical Medical Assistant duties include assisting
the doctor with clinical procedures such as minor surgeries,
performing simple laboratory tests and administration
of medications. Participants will be required to satisfactorily
complete 120 hours of classroom instruction and a 160-hour
clinical externship. The clinical externship will be
performed at a local medical clinic or office and will
be arranged by Boston Reed. The program satisfies all
training guidelines established by the California Medical
Board and the California Medical Assistant Association
(CMAA). Participants will receive a certificate of completion
and be job-ready upon completion of the course. Course
fee of $895 (paid to Boston Reed) includes textbook,
workbook, medical equipment, clinical externship and
certificate. This course is offered in Spring and Fall.

Pharmacy Technician Training
Program*
Watsonville/Aptos Adult School in collaboration with
Boston Reed is offering a 24-week Pharmacy Technician
Training Program. The Pharmacy Technician assists the
pharmacist with mixing and packaging prescriptions,
maintaining client records, referring clients to the
pharmacist for counseling, assisting with inventory
control and purchasing, as well as collecting payment
and coordinating billing. This course combines 168 hours
classroom instruction with a 120-hour pharmacy externship,
coordinated by Boston Reed, to provide students with
a complete learning experience. Enrollments taken on
a first-come, first-served basis. Course fee of $995
(paid to Boston Reed) includes textbook, workbook, medical
equipment, clinical externship and certificate. For
